Risk Preparation Notes for Students

Task Description
Class Overview The topics covered are:

  • Definition of risk management
  • Where does risk management fit in waterfall, agile and iterative life cycles
  • Risk process steps
  • How to differentiate between risk and issues. How to describe it.
  • How to know when the risk has become an issue and how to respond
  • Exercise to assess risk on your project now
  • Using risk data in a project schedule — making it visible
  • When to review and communicate risks
  • Monitoring and controlling risk
  • Protecting the plan
  • Change controls
  • Responding to risks
  • Identify and categorize risk
  • Risk identification techniques
  • Risk response planning
  • Risk management plan
  • Involving stakeholders
Team Selection In the class you will be in teams of approximately 2-7 people. Each team will develop a risk plan for part of its current or future work.A team might be:

  • An existing project team (e.g., project lead, tester, developer)
  • 4-5 class students helping another student that brought a project to class.
  • 4-5 class students with a project common to all of them
Preparation for Each Team Each team needs to bring one of the following (whichever you have, or would like to work on):

  • A project description or medium-size task (approx. 2 months -> 1 year) that has not started yet that you would like to assess risk for
  • An existing project that you would like to assess risk for where there is at least 1 month work remaining
  • A task breakdown to look at to assess risk
Tools Each team can either work:

  • On paper (with a provided copy of a blank risk log)
  • In Excel with an electronic copy of a risk log
